How to Make a Mocha
Prepared Materials
- Coffee beans: Choose coffee beans suitable for making espresso, which usually have a rich flavor and a high oil content.
- Milk: Whole milk is preferred for the milk froth portion of the mocha.
Chocolate sauce: Choose a good quality chocolate sauce to add to the rich flavor of the mocha. - Light cream (optional): used to decorate the surface of the mocha, adding layers of flavor.
- Cocoa powder (optional): used to adjust the flavor of the milk and make it more harmonious with the mocha.
- Other tools: espresso machine, bean grinder, milk frother (if the coffee machine does not have this function built-in), coffee cup, measuring cup, coffee spoon, etc.
Making espresso
- Grinding the coffee beans: Use the grinder to grind the coffee beans to a fineness suitable for the espresso machine.
- Load and cloth the powder: Load the ground coffee powder into the powder bowl of the espresso machine and gently tap the edges of the bowl to make the coffee powder evenly distributed.
- Pressing Powder: Use the powder press to compact the coffee powder into powder cake, pay attention to the strength to be moderate.
- Extraction of espresso: Snap the handle into the coffee maker and tighten it, start the coffee maker for extraction. The extraction time is generally controlled between 20-30 seconds to extract about 30ml of espresso liquid.
Making a mocha base
- Heat the milk: Pour the milk into a milk jug and heat it to a suitable temperature (around 65℃) using the steam function of a microwave oven or coffee maker.
- Mix the chocolate sauce: Pour the right amount of chocolate sauce at the bottom of the coffee cup, the exact amount can be adjusted according to personal taste.
- Pour in the espresso: Slowly pour the extracted espresso liquid into the coffee cup and mix it with the chocolate sauce.
Making milk froth (If desired)
- Whip the milk foam: Pour the heated milk into the milk frother and use the steam function to whip the milk foam. Be careful to control the thickness of the milk froth to avoid excessive large air bubbles.
- Tidy up the milk foam: Use a spoon or spatula to gently scrape away the coarse air bubbles on the surface of the milk foam to make it more delicate and smooth.
Combining and Garnishing
- Add milk froth: slowly pour the whipped milk froth into a coffee cup and cover with the mixture of espresso and chocolate sauce.
- Garnish: If light cream is used, it can be whipped to the right level and then decorated by extruding patterns on the surface of the mocha with a laminating bag. In addition, cocoa powder or chocolate chips can be sprinkled on the surface of the cream as a garnish.
